Four of Europe’s leading artistic directors are on their way to the UAE to conduct a three-day theatre and performing arts workshop programme as part of this year’s expanded Al Ain Classical Music Festival.

The workshops, covering a range of disciplines for would-be performing artists, arts institutions staff and university arts students, are free of charge to everyone in the UAE as the country’s capital progresses its arts education programme.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been making available most of its “course materials that are used in the teaching of almost all MIT’s undergraduate and graduate subjects”. These are available free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.

The “21M.271 Symphony and Concerto” course is now available online, for free, for download as a pdf.

“Course Description

This course is a survey of significant orchestral masterworks composed during three centuries. Listening assignments include 34 symphonies and 24 concertos, composed from the 1720s to the 1990s. Class discussion and oral presentations focus on the works in 18 miniature scores; prior score-reading experience is helpful. Each of the three written papers reviews a concert attended during the term. Since this is a participatory subject, each student will give oral presentations concerning composers and their symphonies and/or concertos.”

What is music? How does it work? Why does it move us? Why are some people better at it than others?  These are questions that have delighted and confounded humans for at least a couple of millennia.

With today’s technology we can move away from speculation to answers grounded more firmly on science.

WNYC’s program Radio-Lab “examines the line between language and music, how the brain processes sound, … meet[s] a composer who uses computers to capture the musical DNA of dead composers in order to create new work.”  Also of note, is the disastrous 1913 debut of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring…through the lens of modern neurology.

Ibragimova was born in Polevskoy, Russia.

Her family was musical, and she began playing the violin at the age of four. As five she started at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow, studying under Valentina Korolkova, and by the age of six had started her career by playing with various orchestras, including the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra.

In 1996 her father took up the post of principal bass with the London Symphony Orchestra, and the family moved to live in England. In the following year Ibragimova began her studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School (where her mother is professor of violin) under Natasha Boyarskaya.

“Consonance” was the logical progression of classics24′s founders to create a community where members can interact by sharing ideas, opinions and in general expressing their love for classical music.

The orchestra played in East Pyongyang Grand Theatre, with the entire concert broadcast on state television.
